The exam period can feel very overwhelming. There can be lot of expectation on you and a huge amount of information to learn and revise. It’s important to look after yourself during this period and try not to let the stress of it all take over, though we know this is easy to say!

It is hard not to compare yourself to others during this time but remember that everyone is unique, so what helps one person might not be the perfect solution for you. It may take some trial and error to find the strategies that work best.

Ways to take care of yourself during the exam period

The exam period can feel long and challenging. There are often exams every day and it can feel a bit relentless and tiring. To try and stay calm during this period you can;

Make Time for Fun Activities – Find ways to unwind and celebrate your progress. Whether it’s listening to music, drawing, taking a walk or unwinding with your favourite TV show. These activities can help ease stress.

Talk About How You Feel – Connecting with others, especially those in the same boat as you, can be really helpful. Talk to your friends and family about your worries. Just sharing these feelings can help ease some of the anxiety. Remember that your parents and older friends have all been through exams in the past and will probably have vivid memories of their experiences!

Find Balance – Set realistic expectations for what you can achieve daily or weekly, balancing study time with breaks.  Include enjoyable activities in your study breaks, such as listening to music or playing a game.  Try and study at the times when you feel most focused and energetic. You will be tired after an exam so try not to plan revision straight afterwards.

Practice in Exam Conditions –  Practicing under exam-like conditions can boost confidence, it can get you used to the time constraints and test your knowledge as you get to the final stages of revision.

Prioritise Your Wellbeing – Taking care of your physical and mental health during this time is essential so try to eat nourishing foods, stay hydrated, and get regular exercise. Stick to a good sleep routine and try and get outside when you can.

Prepare for Exam Day

The night before your exam, gather everything you’ll need—pens, water, ID, and any necessary materials so you are not panicking in the morning. Ensure you have planned your route to the exam centre so you will arrive on time.

Try to wind down away from screens and get a good night’s sleep. It is hard not to worry before bed but listen to some relaxing music or read a book to distract yourself.

The Exam Day Itself

To help manage stress on exam day you can;

Start Your Day Well – Have a good breakfast and give yourself plenty of time to get to your exam without rushing. Although revising right up to the last moment might seem helpful, taking a break can be even more beneficial—you’ve already put in the work.

Calm Yourself with Breathing Exercises – If anxiety creeps in, controlled breathing can help. Try inhaling through your nose for four counts, holding for two counts, and exhaling through your mouth for seven counts. Repeating this can slow your breath and bring a sense of calm.

Take Your Time in the exam – Stress can make you feel like you need to rush, but pacing yourself is key. Read each question carefully, pause when needed, and take a moment to plan your response before writing.

After the Exam

Avoid Comparisons – While some people like discussing answers or looking them up after an exam, this can be stressful for many. If it doesn’t help you, it’s okay to step away from those conversations.
If you’re tempted to compare yourself to others online, consider setting screen or app breaks on your phone to take a breather.

Remind yourself: you did your best, and that’s enough. Every day is a fresh start.

Plan something enjoyable after your exam – Meet up with friends, have a gaming session, or eat your favourite meal. Whatever helps you relax.

Take Time to Recharge – The urge to keep studying might be strong, especially if pressure is high, but rest is just as important. Exams take a lot out of you, and giving yourself space to rest can make your next revision session far more productive.

Most importantly Be Kind to Yourself

Self-compassion is key during this period. Allow yourself breaks, celebrate the wins, and remind yourself that exams are a challenge, but they don’t last forever and before long you can relax and enjoy the Summer!
